In the Studio with Andrew Agutus
Upcoming Artist in Residence
Andrew Agutos (b. 1989, San Jose, California) is a Paris-based multidisciplinary artist whose work integrates abstract painting, cultural collaborations and Polaroid photos. Through an intimate lens informed by personal experience, his practice reveals a poetic voice distilled from fine art, iconography and contemporary culture. His vibrant visual vocabulary, while expanding into commercial contexts, remains rooted in expressionist sensibilities.
Recent collaborations include commissioned artwork for Kendrick Lamar, the Estate of Tupac Shakur, Nas and 21 Savage, leading to the acquisition of two works into the permanent collection of The Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx, New York. Through his imprint Museum & Co., Agutos’s practice moves into publishing and commerce, producing artist books and editions while contextualizing abstract painting next to archival fashion and design pieces.
During his residency at art’otel, Agutos aims to develop a new series of introspective works on canvas. Each painting, individually titled with a stanza, will culminate in a continuous poem installed in the hotel’s gallery at the end of the residency. A video projection or self-published photobook may accompany the series, allowing Agutos to situate his multimedia approach within the context of London.
