Feel the Energy, Feel the Pride – Stay at art’otel Berlin
Every summer, Berlin Pride, better known as Christopher Street Day, brings an enormous energy to the German capital. With around half a million people filling the streets, it’s one of the largest Pride parades in Germany and Europe. To this day, the parade is one big party that doubles as a protest, with queer people demonstrating for equal rights and treatment.

LGBTQ+ history in Berlin and key landmarks today
Berlin has incredible queer history and the people in this city have never been afraid to show who they are. By the 1920s, the city had become a haven for gay and lesbian visitors from across the world, with a lively scene alongside early political organising.
That activism started even earlier. In 1897, physician and activist Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee in Berlin, which is widely recognised as the first LGBTQ+ rights organisation in history. Berlin’s first CSD took place on 30 June 1979, when around 450 people marched in West Berlin under the motto ‘Gay Pride’.
Today, Berlin remains a global LGBTQ+ capital that’s home to landmarks including:
- Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under National Socialism. This concrete monument features a short film visible through a small window as a continuing sign against intolerance, hostility and exclusion.
- Spinnboden Lesbian Archive & Library. This archive houses over 50,000 objects which commemorate lesbian and queer history.
- Magnus Hirschfeld Memorial. Hirschfeld was one of the most important queer activists in his time. He was the founder of the world’s first Institute for Sexual Science and even successfully fought for the rights of trans people.
- Schwules Museum. Founded in 1985, this museum started as a home for the history and culture of gay men and has evolved into an international centre for researching and presenting queer culture and histories.
- prideART Berlin in “The Knast”. This is a former women’s prison that’s been transformed into a queer culture hub. This space hosts a restaurant, bar, studios and exhibitions to showcase queer art and host workshops and events.
Berlin Pride events and parties 2026
There are plenty of Pride parties and events to choose from, and the hardest decision you’ll have to make is which ones to attend.
The key highlights are:
- Stadtfest in Schöneberg (18 to 19 July 2026): Berlin’s legendary Lesbian and Gay City Festival with live music, community spaces and open-air food and drink.
- CSD weekend (24 to 25 July 2026): For the first time, Berlin Pride is over two days, with an additional Friday evening programme at Brandenburg Gate. This year’s Pride motto is “Haltung ist hot” (“Taking a stand is hot”), keeping the focus on visibility and equal rights alongside the celebrations.
- CSD parade day (25 July 2026): This is the main event. The demonstration begins at Leipziger Straße at Spittelmarkt and travels through the city towards Brandenburg Gate, where the finale takes place.
- House of Pride (25 July 2026): The headline after-party is one you don’t want to miss. It’s staged across multiple spaces and is designed as the big post-parade celebration.
- Two official FLINTA* nights (25 July 2026): For a party atmosphere with a clear community focus, there is Love is Love (official CSD FLINTA* party by Girls Town) and Love Always Wins (official FLINTA* Pride party by queer.garten).
Keep an eye on the official CSD website for more action-packed events.
