Amsterdam: The Beating Heart of Global LGBTQ+ Culture
Few cities celebrate queer history as openly, or as beautifully, as Amsterdam.
Homosexuality was decriminalised in 1811, and the city opened its first official gay bar in 1927. Café ’t Mandje on Zeedijk, founded by lesbian trailblazer Bet van Beeren, is often considered one of the earliest LGBTQ+ cafés in the world, preserving a legacy of fearless visibility since 1927.
Today, Amsterdam remains a global LGBTQ+ capital that’s home to landmarks including:
- The Homomonument, the world’s first memorial to LGBTQ+ victims of persecution, unveiled in 1987
- Pink Point, the city’s official LGBTQ+ information hub, beside the Homomonument
- Reguliersdwarsstraat, Amsterdam’s famous “gay street” that’s been a LGBTQ+ nightlife and cultural hotspot since the late 1970s
- The AIDS memorial, a monument that counts down to the moment AIDS is eradicated from the world. It commemorates people who have died from AIDS and shows support to everyone living with HIV.
- Stephen & Penelope, a queer owned craft supply store, focussing on yarns. This cosy store also hosts events and workshops, plus you can find them at festivals.
- Reroll Works, an exciting store selling queer games and hosting game nights to bring the LGBTQIA+ community together.
- FAC Shop, a vibrant clothes store selling fashionable items for going to clubs or at a rave.
